Management and Leadership
Identify Sustainability Leader
Description of Action:
ACT Engineers has named Vlad Odarchenko as the firm’s sustainability leader. With his background in environmental science and sustainable engineering, he brings a passion for sustainability and desire to educate others. ACT’s initial strategy to implement sustainability internally is to present a brief overview of Sustainability to the staff. This presentation is aimed at providing a basis of what sustainability is, why it is important, and what steps ACT can take to implement sustainability (both internally and to our clients). As interest is garnered, the hope is to develop a sustainability team (voluntary members) to meet on a regular basis to review progress toward our goals, develop new ideas and identify opportunities.
Waste
Waste Recycling
Description of Action:
This past May (2018), ACT initiated an E-waste recycling program for old computers stored at the office. ACT management first offered computers to staff (free of charge) for refurbishment/personal use. The remaining computers were then taken to the local municipality Public Works (Robbinsville Township) which offers free eWaste recycling. A total of 10 laptops (which included lithium ion batteries) and 13 desktops/towers were recycled. Utilizing the average weights of a laptop (5 lbs.) and desktop (20 lbs.), ACT’s efforts diverted over 300 lbs. of waste to a landfill, and more importantly, insured the proper handling of toxic chemicals (such as cadmium, mercury, lead), keeping them out of the standard waste stream and the environment.

Energy
Energy Efficiency
Description of Action:
ACT Engineers utilized the EPA’s Energy Star Portfolio Manager® to establish a baseline (benchmark) of our energy usage. We used 2015 as our baseline, and compared energy usage in 2016 and 2017. A slight reduction was noted between 2015 and 2016; however, energy usage in 2017 showed an increase compared to the baseline and 2016 data. The increase could be attributed to additional employees added in 2017. As a result of our benchmarking, we are currently working on determining a goal for energy reduction, and researching ideas to implement energy conservation. Our office’s Energy Star score for 2017 was 76, compared to the baseline score of 81. In comparison to similar properties, our office utilizes less Site Energy and Source EUI.
Energy Other
Description of Action:
During the past two years, ACT has initiated the replacement of old CRT computer monitors to more energy efficient LED/LCD monitors. 18 CRT monitors were replaced with new EnergyStar rated LED/LCD monitors. Using the Savings calculator for Energy Star Qualified Office Equipment (updated October 2016), we calculated that the replacement of old monitors with more energy efficient models decreases energy used by approximately 20%. This equated to approximately 80 kWh of electricity per year and a total cost savings of $62 over the life of the equipment). When considering the production of electricity, ACT’s initiative reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 123 pounds annually. This is equivalent to the emissions reduction of not driving a car for 4 days.

Transportation
Efficient Business Travel
Description of Action:
Travel in business is a necessary evil, whether it is the employee’s daily commute, or travel to a meeting or project site. ACT recognizes the impact of travel and looks for opportunities to minimize miles traveled. Whenever possible, ACT initiates/encourages teleconferences with Clients to replace in-person meetings and eliminate travel. ACT also encourages carpooling, for both daily commuting and business-related travel.
Emergency Preparedness
Be Prepared for Emergencies
Description of Action:
At ACT Engineers, safety and emergency preparedness is a component of all the work we do. Internally, all staff is trained annually on Emergency preparedness and general workplace safety. We have established an evacuation plan and a designated meeting place. In addition, staff has received first aid training and CPR certification.
Community
Support the Well-Being of Your Employees
Description of Action:
Management at ACT Engineers made the decision to utilize AmeriHealth for employee insurance. While plan costs were certainly a driver in the decision making process, the extra services offered, such as Commit2Wellness, played a role in factoring in employee well-being. The program encourages healthy lifestyles by providing incentives, tools and rewards to each employee.
