Hyssop Beauty Apothecary loves and respects our environment and we are enthusiastically committed to minimizing our environmental impact. For everything we do, we will question how we may accomplish the same goal while at the same time improving our environmental performance. Our vow to the environment encompasses our entirety, including our staff, our customers, and our community. Develop Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Plan
Description of Action: 
Purchasing at Hyssop Beauty Apothecary will always place an emphasis on sustainability. This includes: Choosing locally made products when available and when local goods are beneficial to the environment. Refraining from purchasing products that cause stress to the environment such as palm oil that is not sustainably sourced. Purchasing reusable, recyclable, and recycled goods whenever possible.

Description of Action: 
All or our bottles and jars are glass. We choose glass over plastic packaging to reduce the use of harmful chemicals that adversely affect the environment and human health.

Every effort is taken to minimize the use of paper. Aside from required shipping labels and packing slips, our orders and our accounting processes are 90% paperless. Hyssop Beauty Apothecary is currently working towards becoming 100% paperless.

Waste Reuse
Description of Action: 
I offer a bottle buyback program for my customers. When they are finished using the product, they can bring the empty bottle back to my retail store, pop up, or a stockist location and receive a small credit towards the purchase of a replacement. I collect the returned bottles, sanitize them, re-label them, and reuse them, keeping them out of the landfill.

All materials possible are recycled. This includes all of our ingredient packaging, glass, plastic, cardboard, etc.

Food Waste
Description of Action: 
Although Hyssop Beauty Apothecary is not a food establishment, the ingredients used are food-grade products, such as olive oil, coconut oil, coffee, etc. Stock is purchased in the smallest quantities needed in the efforts to prevent spoilage, and it is rotated first in/ first out to ensure that nothing goes to waste. I am thrilled to report that in 2018, there was zero food waste.

An all natural skin care manufacturer, I use no hazardous or toxic substances. All products are created using food-grade ingredients.

The retail store that is opening in November 2019 will use all LED lighting. Construction materials used in renovating the space are as sustainable as possible. Renovation placed an emphasis on locating upcycled furnishings. Landscaping of the property included choosing greenery that requires little and no watering.

Every effort is made to purchase ingredients and supplies from local providers whenever available.

Educational events will be provided at the retail store to educate consumers about reducing waste with their beauty products, and minimizing exposure to hazardous substances.

Lip balm tubes are packaged in zero-waste cardboard tubes that are fully biodegradable for a zero-waste solution. The retail store will offer bulk-purchase bath soak and body scrubs where customers will be encouraged to bring their own containers to fill. Product labels are purchased from a company that utilizes wind energy.
