Provide Environmentally Preferable Products Services
Description of Action:
Almost every products helps reduce single use paper and plastic items. Our materials are all sustainable and products have an end of life plan. Many of our items are made from upcycled and natural materials. All our cleaners, beauty care and body care are non-toxic. We are the second zero waste store in NJ and the first that focuses on upcycled materials. I currently have website and will build it out in the new year, but being sustainable is also avoiding lots of the shipping waste, so I do mostly in person sales at farmers markets, green venues, holiday markets etc.

Waste Reduction
Description of Action:
We are a Zero Waste store. We aim to produce zero waste and we aim to receive zero waste. We sell refillable goods with almost zero plastics. (Sprayer heads are plastic but you can get a bottle with a metal lid.) We sell toothbrushes with nylon bristols and a few of our handmade fabric items are stitched with polyester thread. That's all the plastic we have to date. The store which opens shortly (I currently sell at a variety of local farmers markets) will have refillable shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, laundry detergent, dish soap, etc. All products are sold package free. So customers come and refill.

Waste Reuse
Description of Action:
I make and sell everyday napkins, unpaper towel, tea towels, sweeper sheets, and so many more things, all from used cotton fabric. Making one mens cotton t-shirt takes over 600 gallons of water. All the used fabric saves: water, energy and carbon, and reduces use of trees and petroleum for hte paper napkins wrapped in plastic bags. I buy about 20lb of fabric each week. so I calculate (below) 20x52 pounds saved from landfill. I will assume that each family saves $15 per month by switching away from napkins and/or paper towels . So $15 x 12 months x 800 (clients on newsletter) =$144,000 newsletter customers.

All the used fabric saves: water, energy and carbon, and reduces use of trees and petroleum for the paper napkins wrapped in plastic bags. I buy about 20lb of fabric each week and make it into more useful products. so in water savings that is about 40 cotton shirts of fabric per week x 600 x 52 weeks. The used fabric saves me likely about $400 per week in lower material costs. so that's $20800. ***Keep in mind the actual cost of the environmental damage incurred by products is generally not included in the cost of the fast fashion, the disposable plastics, etc. In other words, consumers never pay for the environmental devastation their choices cause. Most folks don't even know the damage they cause, so change comes really slowly.

Description of Action:
I educate. By working local farmers markets and explaining sustainable products, how they work, why they are better, what the savings are, I teach. Traveling to farmers markets, I educate a broad array of customers. My Newsletters help educate customers. I speak publicly at many venues: This year includes: Sony Corp, Sierra Club, Greenfaith, local church groups, Elementary schools, High Schools, Women's Groups, etc.
