Description of Action:
During 2019, the Berkeley Heights Innovation and Sustainability Alliance (a/k/a Sustainable Berkeley Heights) conducted two successful shoe drives, collecting a total of 212 pairs of shoes in total. All shoes were donated to Soles4Souls, where they will be re-used by people in need domestically and globally. Presuming an average pair of shoes (including sneakers, boots, sandals, and other dress shoes) costs $50, we effectively helped save $10,600 (212 pairs of shoes x $50 = $10,600) in costs relating to sales associated with the purchase of new shoes.

Waste Recycling
Description of Action:
On March 17, 2019, we partnered with Union County to conduct the first town-wide litter clean-up of the year. Our clean-up, held in the Berkeley Heights section of Union County Passaic River Park, attracted approximately 40 people of all ages. The event lasted just under two-hours and covered approximately one quarter of a mile. The group collected 11 bags of trash, 9 bags of recyclables, a mound of discarded Christmas trees and other brush, logs that had been sawed into large pieces, wooden poles, and various types of construction materials. Some of the more unusual items gathered included a truck tire that had been wedged between the riverbank and a tree, as well as a partially-dismantled lawn mower.

Description of Action:
We partnered with Val's Valiants, the Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission, the Berkeley Heights Downtown Beautification Committee, Girl Scout Troop 40822, Scout Pack 368, and other community members to conduct 6 litter clean-ups during 2019. As a result of our efforts, we removed litter that otherwise would have continued to pollute the environment. By removing this litter, we helped to decrease groundwater contamination and improve the air quality in our town.

Description of Action:
We partnered with the Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission to produce Berkeley Heights Vegan Fest 2019. The 3-day event included evening yoga at sunset, planet-focused and health-focused educational panels, and a fabulous Vegan Cook-Off. Attendees learned how being mindful in their daily actions - including their food choices, such as a plant-based diet - can have a positive impact on the planet's environmental preservation as well as a positive impact on their own health.
