Waste Management of New Jersey, Inc. Flora CORe Facility

Business Information
Name of Organization:
WM of New Jersey, Inc. Flora CORe®
Organization Type:
Business Description:
CORe® is WM’s organic recycling process that converts food waste into EBS®, an organic slurry product used to generate green energy. With CORe®, we collect commercial food waste from restaurants, schools, food processing plants and grocery stores, screen it to remove contaminants such as plastic, packaging and bones, and blend the waste into an engineered slurry that has a consistency like cooked oatmeal. The slurry dramatically increases the production of biogas in anaerobic digesters, which is used to create renewable energy.

Waste Reduction
Description of Action:
WM has eliminated single use plastic water bottles, and has reusable cups, plates and utensils available in our kitchen. We purchase recycled printer paper and encourage going paperless as much as possible.
Waste Reuse
Description of Action:
At CORe, we receive a lot of food waste that is packaged and on pallets. We have identified a vendor who has been able to collect used wooden pallets and re-use them. Now instead of throwing them away, we are able to send out an average of 250 tons worth of pallets to be re-used each year. That is over 500,000 lbs worth of material that would have otherwise been sent to transfer station/landfill.

Description of Action:
WM's patented CORe® food waste recycling system is an innovative process that recycles pre- and post-consumer food waste into an engineered bioslurry organic feedstock, which is then introduced into an anaerobic digester at the nearby Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority to increase the facility’s production of biogas. The CORe® facility is capable of producing a high-quality bioslurry from a wide range of organic material, varying from clean organics to packaged food materials. Since the opening of the facility in March 2018 through March 2022, WMNJ has recycled over 58,000 tons of food waste.

Emergency Preparedness
Be Prepared for Emergencies
Description of Action:
At the Flora CORe Facility, WM has developed a thorough emergency preparedness program (EPP) to ensure that appropriate actions are taken during emergencies. Planning helps to ensure an appropriate response and minimizes confusion, injuries, and property damage. Recognizing that local situations vary, WM requires each facility to anticipate, plan, train, and drill for potential emergencies. The development of an EPP is a critical outcome of the planning process. All employees are familiar with the details of the plan, participate in any associated training and practice drills, and be prepared to execute their individual roles and responsibilities. The site conducts a drill quarterly to respond to the most common emergencies.
