Description of Action:
With concern rapidly escalating about our warming planet, Studio 1200 believes that sustainability needs to be an important consideration for every project. In order to have healthy and sustainable communities, we need to make choices about reusing when possible and being decisive with space to use natural resources more efficiently.
We believe that our design team’s objectives need to include reducing consumption, minimizing waste and create a healthy and recyclable environment. With a certified LEED architect on staff, we have the capability of working within the LEED framework. We know that every design decision has an environmental impact and take seriously our role navigating through the sustainability opportunities and challenges of every project.
At Studio 1200, we have been promoting sustainability in multiple ways. After purchasing our building last year, we undertook a major renovation where sustainability was a top priority. We started with a high quality, highly reflective roof that helps to maintain the temperature of our HVAC equipment and minimize heat gain and loss within the building. We installed new, insulated windows, and high efficiency HVAC units.
On the interior, we chose to leave many partitions in place and make staff seating work accordingly, rather than gut everything in the new space. We also moved and reused all of our existing millwork, library shelves and systems furniture – a tricky logistical feat- but better than throwing it in a landfill! In all instances, we chose to use sustainable materials and finishes.
