Management and Leadership
Identify Sustainability Leader
Description of Action:
Dr. Patrick Smith / Sustainability Leader; Carrie Butler, office manager / Assistant Sustainability Leader
Annual Environmental Goals
Description of Action:
Continue maintenance of large, industrial size recycling bins for our business and entire building. Our goal is to launch an effort to recycle shredded paper this year. In addition, we will endeavor to limit electrical (lighting, heating, air conditioning, etc.) use to only hours when doctor is seeing patients and staff is in the office.
Develop Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Plan
Description of Action:
Adopt a policy to purchase more environmentally friendly cleaning products and office supplies.
Waste
Waste Reuse
Description of Action:
Smith Chiropractic Foundation sponsors and organizes the annual Berkeley Heights 5k Road race and Fitness Walk that over the last 23 years has raises thousands of dollars that were donated to local community, non-profit organizations. At the race there are always recycling containers made available to attendees so that the race is a zero waste event. Sponsors with booths include organizations committed to health, fitness and physical well-being. In 2019 we partnered with Sustainable Berkeley Heights to conduct a shoe drive on-site at the race. The shoes collected were donated to Soles4Souls, where they will be re-used by people in need domestically and globally. Presuming an average pair of shoes (including sneakers, boots, sandals, and other dress shoes) costs $50, we effectively helped save $3,500 (70 pairs of shoes x $50 = $3,500) in costs relating to sales associated with the purchase of new shoes.
