Provide Environmentally Preferable Products Services
Description of Action:
The Green Building Center creates healthy, environmentally responsible, prosperous places to live, work and play in. Our services include sustainable consulting, design, construction, material supply, alternate financing and education. Whether we are providing design services, working a consultant to another design team or working directly with the Owner, we only recommend and use materials and products that meet the highest standards of sustainability for people and planet. We developed a sustainable materials catalog which is where we start with all our projects to ensure sustainability. We prefer locally sourced, thord party verified products with labels such as Cradle to Cradle, SCS, Declare, and Green Screen certification to name a few. Visit our website for more information.
Waste
Waste Reduction
Description of Action:
GBC-NJ is located in the City of Lambertville which has a recycling requirement for plastic, glass, metal, paper and cardboard. In addition, the City has a drop off center for electronics, large appliances, batteries and other assorted items available to GBC-NJ. GBC-NJ's goal is to reduce our waste stream 75% below typical business practices. In addition to the recycling program we take advantage of, we endeavor not to create waste in the first place by using glasses, mugs, china plates and silverware in our office rather than disposables; using reusable straws; avoiding single use plastics in general including both bags, food containers and cups; and providing the same to our clients when visiting and to take such items as reusable straws with them when they leave. For every bag of garbage we produce typically we have 3 of recyclables.

Energy Efficiency
Description of Action:
Since moving to our showroom and office in 2013, we have systematically replaced lighting in our space from halogen and incandescent lights to LED bulbs. In all we have replaced 24 bulbs, reducing our total usage from upwards of 100 watts/fixture to 22 watts/fixture for a 78% reduction in lighting energy. Our fixtures run from 11am to 7pm (8 hours) 5 days a week. This is a reduction from 528kwh annually to 316.8 kwh/year and a cost savings of $25.34/mo with an estimated payback of just 22 months and expected life of 20 years.
