Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, Pa, in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and “certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. Today, Wawa is your all day, every day stop for fresh, built-to-order foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services, and surcharge-free ATMs. A chain of more than 750 convenience retail stores (over 500 offering gasoline), Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Central Florida. Wawa formed a strategic green team in 2008, and its members meet once a month. The green team promotes sustainability throughout the company. In addition to our in-store recycling program and store front recycling program for customers, in 2017, we began offering new and improved recycling at the fuel courts in our New Jersey stores. This is an important step forward in our trash and recycling goals and makes it more convenient for our customers to recycle. In 2023, customers recycled over 22,025 tons of cans, plastics, cardboard, and bottles through our recycling programs.

Description of Action: 
In 2013, Wawa launched the Wawa Share Food Donation Program in select stores. Currently more than 90% of Wawa stores participate in the program. 4.1 million pounds of unsold food items are donated annually to local food pantries through the program. In 2023, Wawa donated 3.5 million meals across all our regions.

Description of Action: 
Wawa continues to upgrade the exterior parking lot and site lights to LED at its New Jersey stores. Our store remodel program only installs LED interior lighting. This has helped Wawa reduce its electricity use and carbon footprint significantly in New Jersey and the other states we operate. Every store is retrofitted for LED lights in the cooler/freezer display doors which have saved Wawa on average $2,000 per store per year and every store has motion sensors installed as well.

Renewable Energy
Description of Action: 
In 2018, Wawa started to test solar panels to power three stores with carbon-free, renewable energy. Three stores with full solar “farms” now generate significant renewable power to offset any dependence on carbon-emitting energy sources. The success of these tests meant Wawa was able to move forward with installing solar panels on fuel canopies and ground canopies at more than 115 stores throughout New Jersey as of 2023. We have been able to also incorporate solar canopies into our new store build.

Wawa began hosting electric vehicle charging stations in 2017. Currently, Wawa hosts 165 EV charging stations with over 1,400 charging positions available. In 2023, Wawa hosted 4.1 million individual charging sessions and remains the #1 retailer in North America in terms of the number of Telsa charging stations hosted.

In our Wawa Stores, we use water efficient equipment and fixtures. Some examples include 96% thermal efficient gas water heaters, sensor faucets and high efficiency sensor urinals and lavatories. We use our Building Automation Service (BAS) to monitor water usage real-time and identify leaks/high usage.

Description of Action: 
Wawa’s support and commitment to serving our community was showcased once again during the 2016 Barnegat Bay Blitz Event in New Jersey. The Barnegat Bay Blitz cleanup effort was part of Governor Christie’s 10-point plan for restoring the waterway. With 37 Wawa volunteers, we were able to come together with volunteers from schools, environmental groups and community organizations to help clean up the New Jersey Watersheds. The entire Barnegat Bay Blitz cleanup had 1,841 volunteers who collected 532 bags of garbage/recycling filling 15 dumpsters! Wawa was a partner in litter pickups in Jackson Township, Toms River, and Ocean Township. In the Ocean Township cleanup, the most interesting find was 150 square feet of landscaping fabric.

Support the Well-Being of Your Employees
Description of Action: 
Wawa has a Wellness Fit-to-Fly Program which encourages associates to eat right, move more, quit tobacco, inspire others, and have fun. This program allows associates to get a discount on select products in their store during their work hours. Additionally, Wawa provides every associate with our You Matter program which includes access to free mental health sessions, 24/7 crisis support and other important mental wellbeing tools.
Serve Customers with Disabilities
Description of Action: 
For more than 40 years, Wawa has proudly supported employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. In 2021, Wawa celebrated our associate Ari Shiner for reaching the incredible milestone of his 40th anniversary working in our Princeton, NJ store. Ari began working at Wawa in 1981, and today, he is considered a pioneer in opening the door for people with autism to gain employment and make a true difference in the retail landscape. Since that time, Wawa has joined with several organizations to give adults with intellectual disabilities job training and employment through supported employment programs.
Support Community Initiatives
Description of Action: 
The summer of 2023, Wawa and The Eagles Autism Foundation partnered to host youth from Police Athletic League centers for a day of education and inspiration and a “fitness to fly” all abilities clinics. The Program included interactive healthy eating tips and presentation by Wawa’s nutritionist, an activity reinforcing the power of positivity presented by The Wawa Women’s Leadership WIN group and a physical fitness clinic hosted by the Philadelphia Eagles Cheer Team. The day included a healthy lunch, nutrition workshop along with fun activities to encourage fitness and to get people from all areas and all abilities to be more active.
Adopt a Cause or Project in your Community
Description of Action: 
In 2023, Wawa and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia unveiled a new Wawa Coffee and Care Cart to the new hospital located at the Middleman Family Pavilion in King of Prussia, PA and continue to serve the Philadelphia campus of CHOP. The cart, full of free coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and a variety of cold Wawa beverages for patients, their families, and employees, makes rounds daily through the new hospital as well as at CHOP’s Specialty Care and Urgent Care centers on the King of Prussia campus. The cart operation is made possible by a $6.15 million commitment to bring the cart to the King of Prussia campus to expand the Wawa Volunteer Services program and it will also provide funding for the reception area of a Family Resource Center in the new patient tower on CHOP’s Philadelphia campus, scheduled to open in 2028. Between the King of Prussia and Philadelphia Campuses the Wawa Coffee and Care Cart has created millions of smiles over the last 20 years and is currently on track to serve more than 160,000 drinks each year.
