Adopt Environmental Policy Statement
Description of Action:

DKA Environmental Policy Statement
Daniel Kopec Architects LLC has a longstanding belief in environmental stewardship and ecologically-minded solutions.  It is our goal to imbue each and every project with effective design strategies, materials and systems that conserve energy and resources, minimize negative environmental impacts, improve occupant comfort, and contribute meaningfully to the community.  In order to achieve this end, DKA believes we must lead by example and for that reason the firm operates with a light environmental footprint.
Operating out of an office in an environmentally conscious, adaptive-reuse building situated conveniently between two NJ Transit rail stations, DKA sets an example for minimized energy consumption in transportation and office operation.  The firm also minimizes generated waste and maximizes the recycling of the waste that is generated.
The following tenets constitute the current environmental policy of the firm.  As a living document this policy will be edited when and wherever advancements can be made.
×          DKA strives to educate clients about the cost-effectiveness of environmentally conscious design choices and the cost benefits of energy-efficiency.
×          DKA believes in the benefits of a healthy and comfortable work environment.  One that employs daylight, excellent indoor air quality, and safe and optimal working conditions.
×          DKA strives to minimize generated waste through modified operations and technological advancements.
×          DKA believes in the importance of maintaining a foothold on the leading edge of green design strategies.  The firm encourages continuing education in the subjects of sustainability, environmental stewardship, and ecologically sound design.
×          DKA seeks to promote environmentally conscious practices.
×          DKA believe that civic engagement is a critical component to a healthy relationship with the community.  The firm supports local charitable foundations and encourages the engagement of its employees in the pursuit of community service.

Provide Environmentally Preferable Products Services
Description of Action:

Daniel Kopec is a LEED Accredited Professional. All architectural projects designed by the firm strive toward a Net Zero goal. Every project to date has been designed to be at least 30% better than energy code minimum requirements. While not precisely measurable, we strive to design all projects to be as efficient as possible - this includes efficient mechanical systems and tankless domestic hot water heaters on all new construction and major renovations, extremely high performance windows imported from Europe that meet PassivHaus standards, PassivHaus building envelope detailing on all applicable additions, and maximized daylight.

Waste
Waste Reduction
Description of Action:
DKA recently employed a pdf markup software - BlueBeam Revu that permits digital mark ups of progress documents. Previously, documents were printed and marked up by hand for revisions to be re-entered digitally. Paper is our single largest waste product and this move greatly reduces our consumption.

Energy Efficiency
Description of Action:
Our 200sqft office is entirely daylit during business hours. In the winter and evening staff employs LED task lights for additional illumination. This lighting accounts for .05w/sf. Utilizing a benchmark IESNA industry standard lighting power density of 1.1w/sf, this is a 95% reduction.

Description of Action:

Transportation
Employee Commute
Description of Action:
Our office recently moved. The new location is within walking distance (<.5mi) from the owner's residence and within .25mi from an NJT rail station providing staff the ability to commute by rail. Utilizing the DOT average of a 24mi round trip commute and recognizing that the owner walks to work and one part-time employee commutes by train, we estimate the miles saved at 576/mo.
