Implement Environmental Management System

In 2024 we became one of New Jersey's 88 Certified Organic Farms (there are over 9,900 farms in our State, but just 88 of us are Certified Organic).

Description of Action:
We compost all plant cuttings, vegetable and fruit waste onsite and use it to provide organic matter back to our soil.
Energy
Energy Efficiency
Description of Action:
Cold Brook Farm was designed from the ground-up to be a Zero Energy Homestead. We utilize a solar array of 72 panels along with ground source heat pumps for heating and cooling and an extremely tight building envelope to allow us to not only make all of the energy need for everything we do in our home and on our farm -- except for a diesel tractor -- and we also generate enough electricity for 30,000 miles of driving per year (we both drive electric cars).

Water Conservation
Description of Action:
We utilize a rainwater recapture system that directs all of the leaders from our farmhouse to a 2,500 gallon underground cistern. This water is then used to irrigate our fruit and vegetable beds.

Stormwater Management and Site Design
Description of Action:
We use a 314 foot long Detention Basin / Bioswale for rainwater capture and groundwater recharge. Water flows into this AFTER (and only if) our 2,500 gallon rainwater capture cistern is full. This has also been planted with native flowers to serve as a habitat for our honey bees. This design feature was used instead of the "normal" installation of dry wells.
Gallons of Water Saved:
100,000
Wetlands Protection and Restoration
Description of Action:
The NRCS has awarded us a grant to restore the portion of the Cold Brook that runs through our property to remedy the damage done by recent heavy rainfall events (the two hurricane remnants that affected our area in 2021). This work will include wildlife habitat restoration, stream bank and bed restoration along with the creation of three vernal pools elsewhere on our property. The work will be done by Urbani Fisheries in August 2023.

Independent Green Buiilding
Description of Action:
Our entire farmstead was designed and built using green building techniques. These include a building envelope consisting of exterior walls constructed using extensive air sealing, T-Studs, rigid insulation sheathing, cellulose insulation and triple pane windows and doors. Materials for the farmhouse included recycled wood siding, metal roofs, zero VOC paints and adhesives, locally sourced stone, locally sourced wood flooring, soapstone counters from Virginia, and EPA-rated fireplace (as a backup heat source), ground source heat pumps, solar power and ultra efficient, all-electric appliances.
Environmental & Community Restoration
Environmental Restoration Project
Description of Action:
We restored the entire Length of the Cold Brook that runs through our property (blue line on attached document) with the assistance of a $80,000+ grant from NRCS. This included removal of invasives, the planting of native trees, shrubs and plants as well as the habitat within the stream itself.
