Design Ecosystems' Sustainability Team consists of the two acting Partners Tom Tamayo Young and Dean Janulis.
Annual Environmental Goals
Description of Action: 
Design Ecosystems' annual environmental goals are to increase native plant material use percentage to 100%, optimize water management, improve soil health, increase climate resistance, reduce carbon footprint, and to minimize light and noise pollution.
Develop Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Plan
Description of Action: 
Design Ecosystems purchases plant material from sustainability committed businesses. One nursery that has been used is Pleasant Run Nursery, which part of the New Jersey Sustainable Business registry. Hardscape materials are produced and purchased from businesses within a 50 mile radius are prioritized over non-local materials.

Employee Commute
Description of Action: 
Design Ecosystems is a decentralized office with all employee’s and contractors working remotely. This reduces the energy requirements of needing a physical office space.
Efficient Business Travel
Description of Action: 
When traveling to site visits, nurseries, etc, the team meets at the closest spot and carpools the following distance to save gas. The closest worker to the job will go on their own whenever possible to avoid additional driving for farther away co-workers. The majority of client meetings are conducted via zoom.

Stormwater Management and Site Design
Description of Action: 
Sites are designed through grading, planting, masonry, choices to retain and infiltrate as much storm water on site as possible . Downspouts are redirected from driveways and into rain gardens, bioswales, and other water percolation systems.
Wetlands Protection and Restoration
Description of Action: 
Wetlands and waterbodies are identified at the beginning of projects and designs always made to avoid damaging the natural systems. Silt fencing and barriers are placed wherever needed to avoid construction runoff.

Tom Tamayo Young is a SITES Accredited Professional (U.S. Green Building Council Program) and holds a Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture. Dean Janulis is a licensed Landscape Architect and has a Audubon H.E.L.P.: Habitat and Ecosystems Land Pro certification. He holds a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture.
