Identify Sustainability Leader
Description of Action: 
Our founder, Edward Schwartz was a Green Guru. Going by the name of "Eco Ed", he has been involved in the green movement for decades. Ed dedicated his life to creating a more sustainable future, and saving the planet. He is a member of many municipal green energy boards, and has helped write the guidelines for many historical societies on making historical homes more energy efficiency. He has dedicated his time to many groups and organizations, including the Hackensack River Keepers, REAC, local schools and municipalities, and the Sierra Club, giving speeches on efficiency and developing green methods to maximize energy efficiency and green practices on a larger level. Recently, Ed has worked with the Mayor of Maui to create a sustainable plan for the island. This includes utilizing a variety of renewable energy methods, in-house waste management and reduction, water purification, and others methods of sustainability. Ed owns an almost net-zero energy home, and travels using the most energy efficient methods and vehicles.

Description of Action: 
<p>Our services focus directly on reducing home energy consumption. We begin with a comprehensive home energy audit, which is the primary step to assessing how a customer's home consumes energy, and to discover what means they can take to make their home more comfortable, and energy efficient. Based on a "whole house approach", our trained and certified consultants will evaluate a variety areas in a customers home, in accordance with the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program, to identify problem areas, and deliver a single comprehensive report to maximize energy efficiency and save money. We then provide the follow up work, including insulation, HVAC, solar, doors, windows and other renewable energy renovation solutions. These green renovations generally reduce home energy consumption by 25% or more.</p>

Description of Action: 
Our office composts all compostable materials after use. From foods and plants, to compostable plates and utensils. The composted material is used to fertilize gardens and trees around the property. All leaves from the property are also blown into a continuous composting pile, which serves the same purpose.

Our office recycles all possible recyclable materials. General waste such as bottles, cans, cardboard, newspapers, and paper is recycled with our local municipalities. Other materials such as paints and batteries are saved in bins until local collection sites are available.

Description of Action: 
The Green Living Solutions demo home/office utilizes a variety of green and energy efficient systems. Built in the early 1700's, this dwelling was recently noted as the most sustainable historical home in New Jersey. The large solar array generates more than 75% of total energy used in the office. Heating and cooling for the building is provided by a recently installed geothermal system. Hot water is provided by a tankless, on-demand water heater. Our building has undergone multiple renovations to ensure it is properly insulated from top to bottom. The attack rafters, as well as all accessible walls and applicable ceilings have been sealed and insulated with spray foam. The property is a registered wildlife sanctuary, is 100% pesticide free, and utilizes rain barrels and recycled water for nourishment. All floors in the building have been recycled or refurbished, to avoid using new materials. Areas that required new flooring have been retrofitted with cork floors, one of the most sustainable flooring options available on the market. All interior zones are also regulated with programmable thermostats to ensure that HVAC systems being run efficiently.

<p>The Green Living Solutions demo home/office utilizes a large solar panel array, that is used to power our daily operations. This system has been up and running since 2008, and provides more than 75% of the energy used in the office. This array has provided over 70,000 KWH and saved over 119,000 lbs of CO2 since installation.</p>

Efficient Business Travel
Description of Action: 
Green Living Solutions utilizes a Toyota Highlander Hybrid for all of its business operations. This SUV receives an average of 27 City and 25 Highway, which is substantially more efficient than the non-hybrid version (18 City / 24Hwy). This vehicle is used for all company travel, including travel to and from customers houses. The use of this hybrid vehicle is estimated to have saved over 1,000 gallons of gasoline since it's purchase in 2008.

Description of Action: 
All water used on gardens, trees, and lawns at the office come from rain re-capturing systems (rain barrels) located around the property. These systems re-capture runoff rainwater, and store it in 50/100 gallon containers. The water is then redistributed using gravity. All plant life on the property is retrofitted with drip irrigation, to ensure the most efficient use of recycled water.

Description of Action: 
Green Living Solutions is a certified BPI Goldstar Contractor, and our technicians/consultants carry multiple accreditations with the BPI (Building Performance Institute). This allows us to participate in New Jesey's Green Energy Program. These certifications are designed to teach our technicians and consultants how to properly analyze and reduce energy consumption within a home. Accreditations include Home Analyst, Home Envelope Professional, Heating Professional, and AC/Heat Pump Professional. Our technicians are also EPA Type 2 Certified, used in the safe and environmentally friendly handling of refrigerants.

Description of Action: 
Green Living Solutions and its employees give back to the community and donate our time wherever possible. We participate in all green community events, including green fairs, tree plantings, waste cleanups, green initiative meetings, and more. We also help local municipalities, recently completing and implementing a methane recapturing system for local waste facilities, which reduces emissions and creates energy to power local buildings.
