Waste
Waste Reuse
Description of Action:
Great Road Farm compost their vegetable scraps to create a natural soil that improves moisture retention, increases crop nutrient content and improves overall health of plants and soil. Composting organic waste is a way of reusing organic waste to return nutrients back into the soil.
Waste Recycling
Description of Action:
Some structures around the farm were built using recycled wood from a local lumberyard. Reusing the wood helps to preserve the natural environment by lowering the demand for trees to be cut for timber.
Energy
Energy Efficiency
Description of Action:
Compact fluorescent light bulbs are used inside of buildings for more efficient energy use. These lights use about 75% less energy as compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, which greatly reduces the farm's carbon footprint.
Renewable Energy
Description of Action:

Great Road Farm generates on-site photovoltaic electricity which reduces overall utility expenses and fossil fuel dependency.

Description of Action:
Great Road Farm makes its home on 112 acres of beautiful, preserved farm land. After performing a simple soil test, the data showed that up to 9.16% of the farm's soil contains organic matter. Soils typically range from 1 percent to 10 percent organic matter. Soils with high organic matter help to sequester carbon and contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, soils contain about 3 times more carbon than the atmosphere and 4.5 times more carbon than all living plants and animals.
