Description of Action:
1. We’ve installed passive solar light tubes in the brewery that not only bring natural light into the building but greatly reduce the need for artificial light. 2. All electrical lighting will be high-efficiency fluorescents. 3. Our high-efficiency boiler works on demand requiring just a small fraction of the natural gas a conventional always-on boiler needs. 4. The roof has triple the insulation our prior roof did. A reflective surface reduces demand for cooling. 5. All the lighting in our offices are motion-activated high efficiency fluorescent.
With funding from the NJ Clean Energy Program’s Direct Install program, Flying Fish Brewing Co. installed a high-efficiency boiler, air conditioning units, digital thermostats and retrofitted lighting throughout the brewery. The Direct Install program covered 70 percent of the cost, NJCEP incentives provided $28,414 of the $40,591 total project cost. The upgrades were estimated to save Flying Fish an additional 35,644 kWh and 637 therms per year, totaling about $4,015 annually.
Specific Technologies: Efficient lighting; 5-ton and 10-ton packaged HVAC units; dual enthalpy and forced air heat electronic fuel-use economizers
