Industry-Specific
Industry Specific Practices
Description of Action:
In January 2021 Baysave expanded support for local watermen who hand tong oysters. Hand tonging is generally recognized as a sustainable low impact method of harvesting some of the world's best quality Delaware Bay oysters. Our expanded support includes boat launch and storage, truck accessible loading dock and improved lighting for security after sundown. We expect that the hand tonged harvest may increase total harvest by about 200 bushels per month. (This is our estimate. Oyster harvest must be recorded and tagged according to state law by the independent harvesters not associated with Baysave). Our action saves the harvesters driving about 30 miles per day to a site further from the harvest beds.
