Management and Leadership
Develop Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Plan
Description of Action:
We go into the forests we’ve sourced logs from, plant trees in many different parts of the world and know the people who cut down our trees. The trees we take down are usually causing issues of encroachment or other forest management issues so we bring home that product for secondary use.
Provide Environmentally Preferable Products Services
Description of Action:

ZOM provides resources to the general public through its environmental awareness blogging. Our blog can be used by anyone looking to stay informed on environmental happenings across the world. ZOM also offers Soil Restoration consulting services, we create tailored strategic plans and designs to fit your projects.

Waste
Waste Reduction
Description of Action:
ZOM strives to be plastic free so we use no single-use plastics for business purposes. We also use paperless invoicing. We normally work with teachers and professors or have a free monthly presentation during the lunch hour at Whole Foods in Newark. Come join us to find out about waste and consumption, how they relate to the environment.
Waste Reuse
Description of Action:
ZOM grows mushrooms on waste-products like used cardboard which saves hundreds of dollars and saves immeasurable amounts of forest and wildlife by not clearcutting temperate and tropical forests for agriculture. Our mycogardens use “waste” products like sustainably harvested logs from local forests or locally sourced wood chips. Mycogardens contribute to soil restoration and we are now on to our fifth soil restoration project this year. We cultivate mushrooms using cardboard, logs, and woodchips on our experimental farm in Oregon and have diverted at least 100 boxes of cardboard from entering landfills. Basically, our farm tasks operate off of waste products! So far we’ve reused about 1000 lbs of wood waste, including bolts of wood, and roughly 25 yards of wood chips and sawdust.

Waste Recycling
Description of Action:
ZOM is committed to recycling and minimizing all business waste. We recycle by not creating waste in the first place. With the exception of our technology needs for research purposes (i.e. soil testing equipment and laptops), we use secondhand materials for everything we do. We use minimal (& no single-use) plastic and recycle less than 2 pounds of glass bottles and paper combined per week.

Environmental & Community Restoration
Environmental Restoration Project
Description of Action:
Mycogardens offer a simple contribution to soil restoration and we are now on to our fifth soil restoration project this year. One of those projects was with the Liberty Hall Farm at Kean University. In the Spring of 2018, we will be restoring one community garden in Newark, NJ.
