Energy
Energy Efficiency
Description of Action:
Overlook medical center’s tri-generation power plant has had the most significant impact on reducing the facility’s carbon footprint. The power plant produces 4 Megawatts of electricity on site by harnessing the waste heat produced by the generators and substitutes steam formerly created by boilers. The use of an absorption chiller creates chilled water for air conditioning and dehumidification; lower grade domestic hot water produced by the system is used by the hospital, as well. This tri-generation process reduces the cost of replaced energy by more than 60 percent, while also providing a redundant electrical generating capability which, in emergency situations, allows the hospital to operate independent of grid-supplied power. The tri-generation is powered by natural gas, the cleanest of all conventional fuel sources; this decreases emissions and the hospital’s carbon footprint – a reduction equivalent to removing the carbon that would be absorbed by 2,244 acres of forest and produced by 1,799 cars annually. Atlantic Health System has also invested in energy efficiency measures throughout its locations. Overlook Medical Center is actively transitioning over to energy efficient lamps and LED light bulbs through ongoing replacement of old bulbs and fixtures as they reach the end of their life cycle. LED bulbs are at least 40% more efficient over fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, and provide 50,000 to 100,000 hours of light per piece.Occupancy sensors have been installed in bathrooms, offices and conference rooms throughout the Overlook facilities. The sensors trigger lights to come on and stay on while the rooms are in use, but they prevent lights from having to be on unnecessarily resulting in significant energy savings.
