Description of Action: 
AHS signed the White House Pledge that was led by the Biden Administration. This pledge states that we have a goal of reducing emissions by 50 percent by 2023 and becoming net zero by 2050. We and 15 percent of all US hospitals are committed to this goal because we recognize how much the healthcare system contributes to domestic emissions and acknowledge climate change is the number one threat to global public health.

Description of Action: 
111 Madison Ambulatory Center has recycling programs in place to recycle non-universal wastes such as plastic, glass, cardboard and paper. Additionally, 111 Madison recycles universal waste such as electronics, batteries, aerosols and more. In 2023, 111 Madison recycled a total of 69842 lbs. of waste which saved 50.8 metric tons of carbon emissions.

In 2023, 111 Madison recycled 26000 lbs. of carboard which allowed them to save 17 metric tons of carbon emissions. The dedication necessary to diligently separate the cardboard from general waste shows how big a role sustainability plays in AHS values.

Atlantic Health Care System received the Joint Commission Sustainability Certification June 2024. This certification spotlights our decarbonization efforts and sustainable practices while showcasing us as a mindful and socially responsible hospital system.

Description of Action: 
In 2023, 111 Madison Surgery Center did not use desflurane for any of the OR cases they had. Desflurane is an anesthetic gas that is one of the most damaging to the environment. As no desflurane was used, this created a cost savings of $4534 when compared to the baseline year of 2021. This also reduced carbon emissions by 31 metric tons. By utilizing anesthetic alternatives, 111 Madison exemplifies the commitment to sustainability that the whole Atlantic Health Care System has.
