Description of Action: 
AHS signed the White House Pledge that was led by the Biden Administration. This pledge states that we have a goal of reducing emissions by 50 percent by 2023 and becoming net zero by 2050. We are among 15 percent of all US hospitals who have committed to this goal. As a system we recognize how much the healthcare industry contributes to domestic emissions and acknowledge climate change is the number one threat to global public health.

Description of Action: 
Chilton Medical Center has recycling programs in place to recycle non-universal wastes such as plastic, glass, cardboard and paper. In 2023, Chilton recycled a total of 359,840 lbs. of waste which saved 288.8 metric tons of carbon emissions and $18,417.60 dollars.

At Chilton Medical Center cooking oil is recycled.

In addition to the “traditional” recycling programs, Chilton Medical Center recycles the following “non-traditional” items: batteries (alkaline, lead, lithium, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride), fluorescent light bulbs, items containing lead, lead shielding, cooking oil from the kitchen, mercury waste, and consumer electronic waste, which includes television sets, laboratory equipment, and other electronic devices. The system has a comprehensive hazardous waste management plan the covers the recycling of all Universal Waste. Chilton Medical Center has a universal waste vendor that picks up all “non-traditional” recyclables. Chilton Medical Center also recycles toner cartridges for all printers in jointure with Staples, Inc.

In April 2024, Chilton Medical Center’s solar panels went live. These panels are located over the parking lot, creating a multi-functional space that generates energy and allows for easy access to Chilton facilities.

Camfil has certified Chilton Medical Center with the “5-star” Energy Rating Achievement. The 5-star award recognizes the company for meeting all ECI (Energy Cost Index) air filtration standards to ensure continued energy savings while maintaining quality indoor air throughout the facility. The 5-star recognition indicates that the facility is using the most energy efficient, longest lasting filters available.

Description of Action: 
Chilton has been working hard to reduce its purchase of beef, bison and game meat. Beef production is extremely water intensive and produces a lot of emissions, therefore by addressing our beef purchasing we can reduce our emissions etc. We began tracking our beef procurement in 2022, since then we have reduced our beef procurement by 66.6%. This equates to a 66.6 percent reduction in carbon emissions from our baseline year and a 66.59 percent reduction in water usage.

Atlantic Health Care System received the Joint Commission Sustainability Certification June 2024. This certification spotlights our decarbonization efforts and sustainable practices while showcasing us as a mindful and socially responsible hospital system.
Environmental & Community Restoration
Environmental Restoration Project
Description of Action: 
Chilton Medical Center host bees in hives. Wild bees are collected and placed in hives to increase their chance of survival. Atlantic Health recognizes bees' role in the environment and their importance to community health. This highlights our commitment to the betterment of the community. We have professional beekeepers who maintain the hives and help us harvest the beeswax and honey. The honey is bottled and sold at our pop-up produce market and local restaurants. The beeswax is turned into lip balm and lotions and sold at our gift shops. Any money made from the sale of these products goes back to maintaining the beehives.

In 2024, Chilton Medical Center received the Practice Greenhealth’s Emerald Award. This award recognizes the top 20 percent of Practice Greenhealth applicants that have advanced sustainability programs with exemplary scores in a various categories such as waste, emissions and energy.
