Description of Action: 
Rockaway Ambulatory Center has recycling programs in place to recycle non-universal wastes such as plastic, glass, cardboard and paper. Additionally, Rockway recycles universal wastes such as electronics, batteries, aerosols and more. In 2023, Rockaway recycled a total of 66868 lbs. of waste which saved 48.7 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Description of Action: 
In 2023, Rockaway recycled 24000 lbs. of cardboard which allowed them to save 19 metric tons of carbon emissions. The dedication necessary to diligently separate the cardboard from general waste shows how big a role sustainability plays in AHS values.

Energy Efficiency
Description of Action: 
All five of Atlantic Health’s Hospitals became Energy Star Certified in 2023 and 2024. This certification process involves auditing by the Environmental Protection Agency and is based on how energy efficient a building is compared to other similarly functioning buildings.

Description of Action: 
In 2024, Practice Greenhealth awarded Rockaway the “Greening the OR” award. This award highlights the exceptional sustainability work done in the OR by Atlantic Health System Employees. In 2022, Rockaway did not use any sevoflurane for any of their OR cases and as such was able to reduce their carbon emissions by 1 metric ton and save $2892.

Support Community Initiatives
Description of Action: 
AHS signed the White House Pledge that was led by the Biden Administration. This pledge states that we have a goal of reducing emissions by 50 percent by 2023 and becoming net zero by 2050. We and 15 percent of all US hospitals are committed to this goal because we recognize how much the healthcare system contributes to domestic emissions and acknowledge climate change is the number one threat to global public health.

Atlantic Health Care System received the Joint Commission Sustainability Certification June 2024. This certification spotlights our decarbonization efforts and sustainable practices while showcasing us as a mindful and socially responsible hospital system.
