Description of Action:
Our goal is to eliminate waste from our operations. We strive for zero waste to landfill. In FY17 (refers to the period between 1 September 2016 and 31 August 2017) 63% of the waste from our DC was recycled, another 1% was converted to energy. This is how we accomplished it:
• Recycled approximately 475 tons (September 2016 through June 2017) of a total of cardboard, small metal, plastic in the form of hard plastic material, strapping and shrink wrap. We work with National Paper Recycling for this. We now send our compacted cardboard to the County for recycling.
• Recently found solutions and set up systems to recycle ceramics, glass, wax candles, textiles such as mattresses, sofas, curtains, sofa covers, cushion covers, and quilts. We work with companies such as Revolution Recovery and CJP Group for this.
• We recycle plastic packaging such as wrappers, plastic bags, plastic containers, Styrofoam by purchasing Zero Waste Boxes from Terracycle who make these materials into other plastic products.
• We recycle cans and bottles from our staff cafe as well through County Recycling
• We send particle board for Waste to Energy. We work with Revolution Recovery for this.
• We send real wood to our pallet company to convert it into mulch. We work with Gorgo Pallet Inc. for this.
