Adopt Environmental Policy Statement
Description of Action:
At IKEA we recognize that our business has an impact on people and the people, in particular people's working conditions, as well as the environment, both locally and globally. We also strongly believe that we can do good business while being a good business. We integrate the concept of Sustainability in everything we do, ranging from the ways of conserving resources to keeping our communities and environment safe and healthy.
Annual Environmental Goals
Description of Action:
We integrate the concept of Sustainability in everything we do. It is one of the cornerstones of our business and we intend it take it one step further by looking at our entire supply chain. IWAY is IKEA's Code of Conduct for suppliers of products, materials, and services to IKEA. It defines the minimum requirements on suppliers & service providers for Environment and Social & Working Conditions.
Management & Leadership Other
Description of Action:
At IKEA we recognize that our business has an impact on people and the planet, in particular people’s working conditions, as well as the environment, both locally and globally. We also strongly believe that we can do good business while being a good business. This is a pre-condition to our future growth that will be achieved along with Suppliers that share our vision and ambition. Our guiding principles when working with environmental, social and working conditions are: • What is in the best interest of the child? • What is in the best interest of the Worker? • What is in the best interest of the environment? Through these principles we support the direction described in the IKEA Group Sustainability Strategy; “People & Planet Positive”. The IKEA Way on Purchasing Products, Materials and Services (IWAY) is the IKEA Group Supplier Code of Conduct. It comprises the IKEA minimum requirements relating to the Environment and Social & Working Conditions (including Child Labor). We communicate these requirements to our supplies and vendors. We work with our co-workers to find the best ways to recycle. We take into consideration their feedback as we manage resources at our DC. We do audits and surveys. IKEA North America is also in the process of mapping how we source of products required for the daily operations of our warehouse. We focus on donation when application than sending products out for recycling, and reach out to organizations in our local communities to find a match for the products that are safe to use. To save energy, we request all our co-workers to keep the dock door shut not in operation. We communicate using several mediums such as posters, face-to-face meetings, TV slides etc.
Waste
Waste Reduction
Description of Action:
Our goal is to eliminate waste from our operations. We strive for zero waste to landfill. In FY17 (refers to the period between 1 September 2016 and 31 August 2017) 63% of the waste from our DC was recycled, another 1% was converted to energy. This is how we accomplished it: • Recycled approximately 475 tons (September 2016 through June 2017) of a total of cardboard, small metal, plastic in the form of hard plastic material, strapping and shrink wrap. We work with National Paper Recycling for this. We now send our compacted cardboard to the County for recycling. • Recently found solutions and set up systems to recycle ceramics, glass, wax candles, textiles such as mattresses, sofas, curtains, sofa covers, cushion covers, and quilts. We work with companies such as Revolution Recovery and CJP Group for this. • We recycle plastic packaging such as wrappers, plastic bags, plastic containers, Styrofoam by purchasing Zero Waste Boxes from Terracycle who make these materials into other plastic products. • We recycle cans and bottles from our staff cafe as well through County Recycling • We send particle board for Waste to Energy. We work with Revolution Recovery for this. • We send real wood to our pallet company to convert it into mulch. We work with Gorgo Pallet Inc. for this.

Waste Recycling
Description of Action:
Before Feburary 2018 our site utilized 2 compactors to store cardboard. We had pickups occurring multiple times a week due to the large volume we produced as well as paying for transportation and recycling. We recently installed a horizontal baler allowing us to bale cardboard and store it on a drop trailer. Cardboard will now be seen as a source of revenue vs. a cost center. Yearly we should make $50,000 on cardboard alone.

Energy Efficiency
Description of Action:
At our DC, following are the various key ways we try to conserve energy: • Insulation on our walls • Motion sensors on lighting • Keeping dock doors closed when not in use • Retrofitting all lights to LED lights by 2020 • Retrofitting dock door shelters with RITE-HITE® ECLIPSE® dock shelter that do not need an air pump
Renewable Energy
Description of Action:
<p>Solar panels on our DC's roof generated 597,497 kWh from January 1st 2016 - December 31st, 2016, 1,260,433 kWh from January 1st, 2017 until July 1st, 2017. This accounts for 23% of our energy consumption for both the years. In this process, we avoided 1,350,045 lbs C02 emissions, 4,854 lbs S02 emissions and 1,921 lbs N0x emissions this year (Jan - July 2017).</p>

Water Conservation
Description of Action:
We closed our water pump loop in September 2015 now the full impact is being seen. This project saved 7.1 million litres of water annually! We have $80,000 in the FY2018 budget to retrofit the Diesel pump with a similar plumbing arrangement. This should save a similar amount of water in addition to what we have already saved with the first project. Two of our washrooms have dual flush toilets that save half a gallon of water per flush. All of our washrooms have waterless urinal systems. In the future, we plan to experiment with atomizers and motion sensors for our faucets to save water.

Stormwater Management and Site Design
Description of Action:
Our Spill Prevention and Countermeasure Plan (SPCC) as well as the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) preserve the land and water around us. These plans are a foundation for the Facility's storm water pollution prevention program. These plans are revised accordingly as conditions and practices at the Facility change to accomodate new methods of productions, storage and material transfer that have potential impacts to storm water. The plans are required through Basic Industrial Stormwater Permit (5G2), a general permit available to regulated industrial facilities that have eliminated or can eliminate within 6 months of authorization, all exposure of industrial materials or activities to stormwater discharges (rainfall and snowmelt waters). The following solutions were found for issues faced: • Secondary containment was put in place to protect from water leaks • Regular clean-up of debris makes sure nothing enters into the stormwater drains • All storage and maintenance is carried out inside to avoid any contamination into the drains
