Description of Action: 
At its Franklin Lakes location, Cigna has a full-service cafeteria that seats approximately 500, and serves 8,000 meals per week. To reduce waste, we have purchased additional dining trays and silverware and encourage employees to use these instead of one time use food containers and utensils. Food Waste from preparation to clean-up is incorporate into a recycling program within the Cafeteria and additional receptacles are placed in Pantries supporting this initiative. The food waste program has amounted to a reduction in 120 tons of solid waste annually from the landfill a result of the food waste to compost program.

Description of Action: 
All janitorial staff utilizes a Green cleaning program where green cleaning products used at the Franklin Lakes location are certified green cleaners.

Energy Efficiency
Description of Action: 
Cigna utilizes a building management system and space temperature schedules to control the HVAC systems, building alarms and other critical systems within its facility. This along with installation of VFD’s on all large motors helps to ensure that the facility is maximizing the efficiency of its equipment reducing energy usage. Cigna is also committed to upgrading its Franklin Lakes facility to energy efficient lighting, in recent years we have done the following capital improvements: • Incorporated 50% LED lighting in all newly renovated floors • Replaced all roadway and parking lot lights with LED lights, which are operated by software to ensure maximum efficiency. • Installed motion sensors in all pantries, copy rooms and janitorial areas • Changed building standard temperature from 72 -74 degrees F to 70 - 72 degrees F in winter and 74 -76 degrees F in summer. The total result of these efforts is an offset to electrical demand by an estimated 5% for lighting and 10% for heating annually ($300,000.00).

Description of Action: 
In 2016, Cigna donated 85 acres of passive and active recreational parkland to the Borough of Franklin Lakes, creating Parson Pond Park. The donation included a childcare facility with capacity for 250 children, a recreation center with 2 baseball fields, tennis and handball courts and 2 full size basketball courts to be used as part of the new public park. There is also a decommissioned sewer treatment plant now used to house the landscaping contractor’s grounds maintenance/snow removal equipment and material storage.
