At the NJ Audubon Wattles Stewardship center we only purchase paper that is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified (FSC Coo1844) Additionally, our magazine and mailers are printed on recycled paper by Cox Printers. They are a NJ based printer that is partially powered by solar and wind. Also the inks used in the printing are soy-based inks.

Water
Wetlands Protection and Restoration
Description of Action:
A former in-ground pool was converted into a functional vernal pool for amphibian breeding. This project won the NJ Soil & Water Conservation Society Ecological Award in 2014
Water Other
Description of Action:
• At the NJ Audubon Wattles Stewardship Center we converted a formerly eroding 10.8 acre agricultural field to a native grassland utilizing native warm season grass species which are drought tolerant, do not need fertilizer and because of their extensive 6-10 foot below grade root system are excellent for soil stabilization and erosion control and provide better stormwater infiltration and act as vegetative filtration of sediments and chemicals from agricultural lands
Certification Programs
NJ River-Friendly Certification
Description of Action:
The NJ Audubon Wattles Stewardship Center is Certified as a River Friendly Farm since 2016 by North Jersey Resource Conservation & Development. This includes performing cover cropping of its agricultural fields each year, annual control or removals of invasive vegetation species, installation and maintenance of stream buffers, & annual nutrient management practice implementation, and no-till planting of crops.
Environmental & Community Restoration
Environmental Restoration Project
Description of Action:
The New Jersey Audubon Wattles Stewardship Center has performed numerous Environmental Restoration Projects and Community Environmental Projects on its property. Specifically: 1. 10.8 Acres of former crop land was been converted to native warm-season grasses for wildlife habitat and soil and water quality improvement under the USDA-FSA programs: State Acres for Wildlife (SAFE) & Conservation Reserve Enhancement program (CREP) 2. 12.7 Acres of Woodland are managed under a NJ State Approved Forest Stewardship Plan 3. 4.33 acres of early successional habitat were created and are managed under the USDA-NRCS Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program 4. A former in-ground pool was converted into a functional vernal pool for amphibian breeding. This project won the NJ Soil & Water Conservation Society Ecological Award in 2014 5. A 0.28 mile forested riparian buffer was installed by NJA along a C1 tributary of the Musconetcong River under a USFWS Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program with the help of NJ Youth Corps of Phillipsburg, as well as, the NJ Homeschool Groups of Warren County 6. NJA also implemented a 0.36 mile stream restoration of the Musconetcong River under a USDA-NRCS Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) for stream bank stabilization, sediment control and creating and/or restoration habitat for brook trout and other associated aquatic species. This project was performed on an adjacent State Wildlife Management Area property which NJA manages for NJDFW.

Environmental Success
Description of Action:
Since NJ Audubon’s mission is to forester environmental awareness and a conservation ethic among NJ citizens, protect NJ birds, mammals, other animals and plants, especially threatened species, and promote preservation of Nj’s natural habitats, our staff shares our successes and helps others to also implement conservation work by performing numerous environmental/conservation related presentations and workshops to the general public, municipalities, corporate entities, farmers and school groups throughout the year. Additionally the staff at the Wattles Stewardship center regularly present our work and projects at various environmentally related forums or conferences associated including but not limited to: The Wildlife Society, the Soil & Water Conservation Society, the annual NJ Land Conservation Rally, the Association of Field Ornithologists, the Wilson Ornithological Society, the National Bobwhite Quail Conservation Initiative, the NJ Stewardship Roundtable, the Coalitional for the Delaware Watershed, the Society of American Foresters, the National Short Leaf Pine Initiative. Furthermore, NJ Audubon staff write numerous articles and posts on NJ Audubon social media outlets (Facebook, Instagram, Linked-in, etc.), the NJA Stewardship Blog and our New Jersey Audubon Magazine (circulation 26,000). Additionally, we work with other businesses regarding habitat restoration through our NJ Audubon Corporate Stewardship Council and community outreach through various USDA-NRCS and NJDFW conservation initiatives.
