Management and Leadership
Identify Sustainability Leader
Description of Action:
At the forefront of our sustainability team is our sustainability leader, Michaela Toscas. Michaela is a recognized leader in her field, having developed multiple businesses while keeping sustainability at the forefront of her businesses. Her shared use facility allows multiple companies to develop products under the same roof, which allows multiple businesses the ability to act sustainably due to severely reduced start-up costs in conjunction with proper sustainability training. Michaela will manage the Mad Gardener Sustainability Team by conceptualizing, crafting, workshopping, and implementing green initiatives for both the company and individual employees. To measure our efforts, we will preform annual sustainability audits to see if we have cut back on water, waste, and energy usage. Additionally, she will also form relationships with local sustainability groups with the goal to sponsor sustainability projects bi-annually.
Waste
Waste Reduction
Description of Action:
Minimizing waste will be a typical and ingrained part of every work day. Mad Gardener seeks to reduce waste at every possible avenue and will choose reusable goods over single-use items at any opportunity. Some initiatives include using Mad Gardener reusable water bottles (given at training and replaceable at any time), reusable washcloths cleaned once per week, concentrated cleaning materials, and separate compost, recycling, and waste bins. The sustainability team will also recognize and encourage any employee that seeks to improve waste reduction via a 'sustainability suggestion box', where employees can anonymously suggest company initiatives to help contribute to Mad Gardener's waste reduction.
Transportation
Employee Commute
Description of Action:
All employees at Mad Gardener will be incentivized to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through transportation. In part with the sustainability team, Mad Gardener will reward employees who minimized their transportation emissions for their commute to work, such as walking, biking, EV vehicles and scooters, buses, and trains. Additionally, Mad Gardener will always incentivize and facilitate a 'ride-share program', in which employees are encouraged to sign up for through recognition, employee discounts, and other monthly prizes. Even with 3 employees carpooling a short distance, we have saved 50 miles in the last 12 months!

Improve Indoor Air Quality
Description of Action:
The Mad Gardener LLC team has experience managing facilities that use carbon-filtered HVAC systems to prevent odor leaving the facility. The facility's design has been carefully planned and implemented for each workspace based upon the available space and the purpose of the area. Airflow systems will meet the cubic feet per minute (CFM) requirements to ensure total odor elimination. A HEPA filter will also be used, The 24-inch-long plastic cylinder and the appropriate grade of activated carbon represent critical components of the effective odor control solution. The unit is engineered to provide the very highest levels of performance in Indoor Air Quality (“IAQ”), comfort, and light-duty process applications while achieving moderate pressure loss values. CamCarb cylinders utilize a high weight of adsorbent per unit airflow. CG (engineering grade plastic) cylinders are made in four different sizes to handle different airflow ranges, and CM (stainless steel) cylinders are made in the same sizes as the two largest CG cylinders. o provide a source of clean air, outdoor air intakes will be located at least 25 feet from exhaust outlets, cooling towers, and sources of vehicular exhaust or other noxious fumes. All air intakes will be equipped with high-efficiency particulate absorber (HEPA) filters to remove dust, pollen, and small particulates, and activated charcoal filters to remove or neutralize pollutants and microbial contaminants. Filters will be changed regularly based on the manufacturer’s recommendations.
