Management and Leadership
Adopt Environmental Policy Statement
Description of Action:
As an architectural and interior design firm, JZA+D is committed to a collaborative process that involves, educates and develops a strong working relationship with clients, contractors, and builders. One of the values that we communicate is our belief that good design is also sustainable design. For the benefit and well-being of our clients, JZA+D encourages the use of “green” design strategies and sustainably sourced products in every project.
Provide Environmentally Preferable Products Services
Description of Action:
Over half of JZA+D's staff is LEED Accredited. The firm incorporates sustainability measures in the design of projects as often as possible, working to LEED standards where practicable, even when formal certification is not being pursued. The firm specifies sustainably sourced, natural materials wherever possible, and energy-saving items such as LED Lighting with “smart” lighting control systems using occupancy sensors. For Indoor Air Quality, the firm’s designers specify low/no-VOC paint, and for flooring, non-off-gassing carpeting, or cork or marmoleum composition tile in lieu of vinyl tile. Also, for the custom furniture that JZA+D designs, we have recommended fabrication with sustainable materials such as organic fabrics, recycled metals, and FSC-certified woods.
Waste
Waste Reduction
Description of Action:
All items that are recyclable within our municipality (paper, cardboard, cans and bottles) are consistently deposited in the recycling containers provided by building management. The office space is not supplied with running water, so to deter use of individual single-use plastic water bottles, JZA+D has water delivered in 4-gallon bottles that are re-used by the water vendor.
Waste Reuse
Description of Action:
For internal use such as drafts, the office re-uses paper, printing on the unused side of any paper that was not initially printed double-sided. Estimated reduction is approximately 2 reams of paper per month.

Food Waste
Description of Action:
Office organic waste (food leftovers, compostable plates & flatware, napkins etc.) is collected in a compost bin within the office and taken to the compost containers provided for a neighboring restaurant, to be picked up via the Princeton Curbside Organic Waste program, helping reduce the production of methane from organics decomposing in landfills.
Waste Other
Description of Action:
As soon as a program to recycle plastic film waste in Princeton was announced, JZA+D began collecting all plastic film wrapping materials being discarded within the office and taking a medium-sized trash bag monthly to collection points such as McCaffrey's supermarket and the Princeton University Store, to be "upcycled" into the Trex Lumber product.
