Annual Environmental Goals
Description of Action: 
AHS signed the White House Pledge that was led by the Biden Administration. This pledge states that we have a goal of reducing emissions by 50 percent by 2023 and becoming net zero by 2050. We are among 15 percent of all US hospitals who have committed to this goal. As a system we recognize how much the healthcare industry contributes to domestic emissions and acknowledge climate change is the number one threat to global public health.

Description of Action: 
Newton Medical Center has recycling programs in place to recycle non-universal wastes such as plastic, glass, cardboard and paper. In 2023, Newton recycled a total of 314,620 lbs. of waste which saved 253.2 metric tons of carbon emissions and $16,259.668 dollars.

Description of Action: 
Recycles Cooking Oil from the Kitchen

Description of Action: 
In addition to the “traditional” recycling programs, Newton Medical Center recycles the following “non-traditional” items: batteries (alkaline, lead, lithium, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride), fluorescent light bulbs, items containing lead, lead shielding, cooking oil from the kitchen, mercury waste, and consumer electronic waste, which includes television sets, laboratory equipment, and other electronic devices. The system has a comprehensive hazardous waste management plan that covers the recycling of all Universal Waste. Newton Medical Center has a universal waste vendor that picks up all “non-traditional” recyclables. Newton Medical Center also recycles toner cartridges for all printers in jointure with Staples, Inc.

Description of Action: 
All five of Atlantic Health’s Hospitals became Energy Star Certified in 2023 and 2024. This certification process involves auditing by the Environmental Protection Agency and is based on how energy efficient a building is compared to other similarly functioning buildings.

Description of Action: 
Newton Medical Center has implemented low flow/high efficiency fixtures throughout its facilities in an effort to reduce water usage. All new construction includes installation of low flow/high efficiency fixtures as well.

Description of Action: 
In 2024, Chilton, Overlook, Hackettstown, Morristown and Newton received the Practice Greenhealth’s Emerald Award. This award recognizes the top 20 percent of Practice Greenhealth applicants that have advanced sustainability programs with exemplary scores in a various categories such as waste, emissions and energy.

Description of Action: 
In 2023, Practice Greenhealth awarded Newton Medical Center the “Greening the OR” award. This award highlights facilities that have made huge progress in making the surgical environment more sustainable. Due to this exceptional work, Newton was able to reduce their desflurane, sevoflurane and isoflurane carbon emissions by 25% since 2021. This reduction has saved 18 metric tons of carbon emissions.
