Annual Environmental Goals
Description of Action:
We have signed the, AIA 2030 Committment. The mission of the AIA 2030 Commitment is to support the 2030 Challenge and transform the practice of architecture in a way that is holistic, firm-wide, project based, and data-driven. By prioritizing energy performance, participating firms can more easily work toward carbon neutral buildings, developments and major renovations by 2030.
Provide Environmentally Preferable Products Services
Description of Action:
We are dedicated to providing the highest level of green planning, design & education possible. Our firm is primarily an architectural practice in the commercial, residential, institutional, and hospitality markets. Our founder, Jason Kliwinski, is also a LEED Fellow & Faculty, Adjunct Professor in Sustainability at NJIT, and GPro certified instructor and spends a considerable part of his time educating the public and private sector on green living and building. He is a passionate sustainability advocate and believes that it should not have to cost more to build green, which he has proven over and over in his many LEED projects across the State. Designs for Life is a co-founding firm of the Green Building Center which takes green building to a new level of integration by bringing design, construction, products and education all under one roof to provide a unique 'one-stop' experience and savings to owner, developers, and real estate professionals. In 2016 assisted client in achieving LEED certification. Suez North America achieved LEED Gold certification under our guidance.

Description of Action:
Promote reduction of impact of CLimate Change. We have scheduled and presented several Climate Reality presentations this past year and have another scheduled in Philly in the coming months
Waste
Waste Recycling
Description of Action:
Our office regularly recycles. In the City of Lambertville is it requires and you are actually fined if you comingle recyclables with non-recyclables, which we think is great. On average we put out 2 recycling cans for every waste can and our waste can is typically not full. If I had to estimate, I would say we probably divert about 40lbs of waste a week from landfills in to recycling. That equates to 160lbs a month which is about 1 ton of waste per year diverted by our little small architectural practice. Since this is the cost of doing business in Lambertville, we can not really put a price on this for us but the cost per ton of waste disposal is about $80/ton.

Energy
Energy Efficiency
Description of Action:
When we moved in to our space in Lambertville as part of the Green Building Center, we noticed all of the overhead track lights were halogens. We have slowly been replacing all of these lights with LED and have only a couple of lights left to replace. In total, about 16 lights have been replaced each saving about 50watt per hour. Our lights are on from 11am until about 6pm each day because our space faces north and does not get substantial sunlight. That 7 hours per day savings equals 350watts/day, 1,750watts/week, 7,000watts/month, 84,000 watts/year for each light blub!

Fleet Vehicles
Description of Action:
In 2013 we purchased a new plug in hybrid Ford fusion which is estimated to get 70mpg. We often do a lot of highway driving to meet with clients across PA, NY, and NJ so while we have not seen that awesome mileage, we are still averaging 55mpg vs about 21mpg in our prior vehicle. Our typical mileage for a year is about 30,000 miles driven. This equates to a savings in fuel of 880 gallons/year and over $2,000 at $3/gallon of gas. Recent drop in gas prices has changed our dollar savings but not our actual gallons/year.

Improve Indoor Air Quality
Description of Action:
We strive to design spaces with the best indoor air quality possible. To do so, we require strict adherence to IAQ plans during construction in accordance with SMACNA guidelines. In addition, we specify products that are extremely low or free of VOC, Chlorine, and Formaldehydes. All of the products we specify are compliant with the Living Building Challenge Chemical Red List. We have seen tremendous interest from clients with hyper chemical sensitivity in creating homes they can actually live in comfortably. Many of these clients visit our office and the Green Building Center product showroom and are amazed that they have NO reaction at all to the dozens of products we have on display because they are healthy and non-toxic products. we, of course, use all the same products in finishing our own workspace.
