Description of Action: 
The Hightstown Housing Authority has undertaken several projects in the last 3 years that have produced an overall 30% reduction in energy consumption. Examples of our projects include replacement of all outdoor lighting fixtures with LED, replacement of permanently mounted interior lighting with LED, installation of daylight sensors and motion sensors on outdoor and common area lighting. For out heating systems we installed 528 individual radiator valves so that each rooms temperature can be adjusted to the individuals comfort level.

Water
Water Conservation
Description of Action: 
The Hightstown Housing Authority has undertaken several projects to improve the water consumption on the property. We have replaced all of the showerheads with low flow devices, faucets with low flow aerators, new toilets with 1.6 gallon flush mechanisms and finally we have replaced all of our laundry equipment with new high efficiency equipment.

Stormwater Management and Site Design
Description of Action: 
The Hightstown Housing Authority is a community leader in the demonstration of storm water management techniques. We have worked with our local Environmental Commission and Sustainable Jersey to construct a large rain garden, rain barrels and drywells as a demonstration site. Since that time we have expanded our projects to include a second rain garden, over 300 lineal feet of percolating trenches and several additional drywells.

Description of Action: 
The Hightstown Housing Authority has been an active participant in the Stony Brook Millstone's Water Friendly program, and will achieve River Friendly Business certification in May of 2017.
Community
Improve Indoor Air Quality
Description of Action: 
The Hightstown Housing Authority has become a "Smoke Free" property. Our board of Commissioners unanimously voted to make all of our residential and public buildings smoke free. This move will greatly improve the indoor air quality in and around our buildings, improve the health of our residents and most importantly reduce the impact of second hand smoke on our children and others living and working in our community. This project has been very successful and well received by the residents of the Authority.

Support Community Initiatives
Description of Action: 
The Hightstown Housing Authority actively worked with the Hightstown Environmental Commission to apply for a Sustainable Jersey Grant. The grant was to develop a storm water demonstration site in Hightstown. The Housing Authority provided the site and the necessary matching funding to accomplish this project.
